Diary, 1863, May 17-July 23.

Photocopied transcript of a diary kept by George Hale, a 22-year-old farmer from Paris, Kenosha Co., Wis. at the time of his enlistment in the 33rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. A member of Co. H, Hale was commissioned from the ranks in June 1863, and became a 1st lieutenant the following August. Hale describes picket duty in the trenches surrounding Vicksburg, Miss. during the siege, then scattered fighting and railroad destruction around Jackson, Miss. until the 33rd returns to Vicksburg. Also included is a letter from Terry W. Frazier, Hale's great-great-grandson, containing additional information.

George Ellery Hale was an astrophysicist. He was the organizer and director of the Mount Wilson Observatory of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1904-1923, and was honorary director until his death in 1938.
